Imagine you are in a bar in Portland Oregon in 1979, with a cassette recorder on your lap, and you run into these guys, playing covers of Henry Cow, Soft Machine, King Crimson, Carla Bley, Earle Brown, etc., interspersed with their original compositions. Well, here you go, you can relive the experience through that very same cassette recording, the early days of Fred and Henry and Randal and Neil, may they live forever!
In 1979 we played every Thursday at the Long Goodbye, which became Jimmy Maks years later and is becoming something else yet again. We were already a bit too weird for the Jazz people, but they would give us a gig, and the Punk people also would give us a gig, but we didn't fit into either camp and were regarded as outsiders from both those musical communities at the time. We made our own scene, and lived in it.
